John F. Kennedy Vintage Autographed Note Acquired in 1959 A Close Encounter with the Future President "from your friend John Kennedy"
In 1959 at a campaign fundraiser in Michigan, an attendee met JFK and asked him to autograph a notepad to his two sons, whose names were Billy and Danny. Billy and Danny were only ten and eleven at the time and having no interest in politics weren't all that impressed. However, their mother was ecstatic and was intuitive enough to put the autographed note away in a scrapbook where it remained for over 50 years. Mom also had the intelligence to lightly tape the note and NOT glue it in as so many people did back then, and also note the tape never touched any of the ink handwriting. Hence, as you can see just the minimum, unobtrusive vintage tape stains on the edges (which actually adds another touch of vintage authenticity).
The result is after 54 years, one of the most bold, pristine JFK signatures we have encountered in 30 years collecting. And while it is typical for collectors to prefer UN-Inscribed autographs, it is actually quite exceptional to find a JFK autograph inscribed as it is something he rarely ever did. What is often seen is the impersonal hurried scribble with first and last names connected. Here he took an atypical quality moment to write an extraordinary note and inscription to both boys, "For Danny & Barry - with best wishes from their friend John Kennedy". For those experienced with JFK's signature they will recognize a dead on match to his 1959 period handwriting and signature per Charles Hamilton's extensive JFK Signature Study.
Everything about this JFK is remarkable. The expected age toning, the bold crisp ink signature, the unusual inscription, the perfect white (with slight age toning) medium. There may not be a better specimen out there!
Collecting historical autographs is one of the most exciting and rewarding hobbies. However, it is no secret that the hobby is rife with fraud. Last year I wrote and article "Ten Warning Signs a Dealer May Be Selling Autograph Forgeries".
